Puppy food water schedule. Smaller meals are easier for the puppy to digest. Once they’ve been weaned, they should be drinking between 0.5 to 1 fluid ounce per pound of body weight each day. An eight week old puppy will only be able to hold their bladder for an hour to two hours at most.
The amount your puppy needs to drink depends on factors including the environmental temperature and their size, exercise levels, physical condition and diet. Give those smaller amounts to him at regular intervals each day. At 5:45 p.m., confine your puppy to his crate for another rest period until 8 p.m.
During this weaning process, you can begin introducing puppies to solid food. At 5 weeks old, feeding your puppy at least 3 times a day is required, but you should prefer to aim for around 4 to 5 times a day. Smaller breeds switch at age 7 to 9 months while larger breeds stay on puppy food until 12 to 14 months.
You need to be there for the feedings because you want the puppy and his entire body on a set schedule. Once your dog has been housetrained, it’s perfectly fine to leave water out and available for them 24/7. With a set feeding schedule, your puppy will learn when to expect food and will be less likely to beg between designated meal times. Around 3:30 or 3:45 p.m., let your puppy outside to relieve himself, and then bring him inside for playtime, food and water. Immediately after feeding, bring puppy outside to relieve himself.
Directions on the food package are only a starting guideline, so be ready to adjust the amount up or down if your baby is still hungry, or leaves food behind.
